Status of Flower Remedies

Most flower essences probably do not contain enough salicylates to block the effects of guaifenesin.  Unlike homeopathic medications, flower essences do not typically have a potency designation with the exception of some of the Bach flower essences. 

In making flower essences, part of the procedure is to make a mother tincture by placing petals (one day prior to opening, when they are at their most potent) in water and setting them in the sun for 3-6 hours (not unlike making sun tea). The number of petals that go into the water varies among makers of essences from one who covers the surface of the water deeply in petals to one who uses only one or two blossoms. The amount of essential oils, and any other chemicals potentially extractable would vary widely, depending not just on the ratio of flower parts to water, but also air temperature. An essence made on a 100 F day will probably extract more salicylate than one made on a 35 F day.

After the mother tincture is made, it is preserved with up to an equal amount of brandy. One FE mfg. (Perelandra) then puts that into dropper bottles and sells it to customers. Most other mfg. dilute one more time. The dilution is most commonly 4 drops of mother tincture to ½ or 1 oz of brandy and water. This final dilution is referred to as the stock level and is what you get when you buy a bottle that has a mfg label.

Bach flower essence manufacturer advises that all of their flower essence products are diluted 1 in 100,000.  They note a 5X designation on some of their products.  In a conversation with them, they advised  that their use of 5X is not intended to imply that it is a homeopathic medication but is labeling intended for UK customers and is used to let them know that their essences are diluted 1:100,000. 

Also, the mother tincture for flower essences is typically much weaker than that of  homeopathics.  For further information on homeopathics see:  Homeopathic Salicylate Information.  We can say with a fair amount of certainty that Bach flower essences are not going to block.  There are quite a few manufacturers of flower remedies

Typically you only take a few drops per dose and no more than 5 or 6 doses per day.  I've read that you can further dilute most flower essences without affecting their potency.  The only essence manufacturer that I've found that states not to dilute is Perelandra. 

To dilute, make a new bottle by taking a few drops of the essence that you bought and mix it with filtered water to make a new bottle.  You would take the same number of drops of the diluted formula as you would have taken of the original bottle.  If you dilute, be sure to shake the new diluted formula for several minutes.  I hit the bottle gently on the palm of my hand.

For our purposes, the big difference between flower essences and homeopathics is the strength of the mother tincture.  For example, Bach makes their mother tincture by putting flower petals in a bowl of water in the sun for 2 hours or if it is not sunny enough, they boil flower petals in water for 1/2 hour. In contrast, homeopathic mother tinctures are made by a maceration process where the plant is cut up and then extracted via alcohol in a 2 week long process.  The homeopathic mother tincture is made to extract as much of the plant as possible. The idea with the homeopathic mother tincture is to extract as much of the plant as possible.  As you can imagine, the mother tincture of homeopathics would be much stronger than a flower essence mother tincture.

When you, as the consumer, use an essence, you use only a few drops, and you or your practioner may even dilute it one more time, by making up your own dosage bottle'-that is, putting a few drops into another ½ oz or 1 oz bottle of water/brandy and taking the same number of drops as you would have from the stock bottle.  Many practioners dilute as a matter of course.

To make a dosage bottle:
1. Fill a one-ounce glass dropper bottle nearly full of spring water or
other fresh water.
2. Add a small amount of brandy (1/8 to 1/4 of the bottle) as a
preservative.
3. To the water and brandy mixture, add two to four drops of the flower
essences from the stock bottle of each essence selected.
4. After the essence stock has been added and before each use you may want
to rhythmically shake or lightly tap the bottle in order to keep the
essences in a more potent or energized state.

If you are concerned about blocking, you could dilute the stock by making your own dosage bottle and do a blocking test after using them for a few weeks.
