Sal-UnsureTM Ingredients& Products
Below is an alphabetical list of Items we think might be ok but are are unsure of for various reasons including:
If you decide to use a product containing any of these ingredients please do a blocking test after a few days and report the results to Tesa or Wendy.

FDA Issues Dietary Supplements Final Rule
Algae, Blue Green Algae, Cyanobacteria, Spirulina, Seaweed, kelp, Chlorella, Irish Moss, Laminaria cloustoni (algae) extract, Laminaria Ochroleuca (a marine plant that lives exposed to intense light), etc. We wonder if they are in a different class to earth grown plants given they are grown in water in rocky and/or sandy soils. Several marine biologists who were contacted have responded that there is no evidence collected that algaes contain salicylates. They are listed as salicylates in Dr. St. Amand's book, however a GG member informs us that Dr St Amand's office have approved kelp in a product (See archives: Feb 8, 2005, SAL: Gloves In A Bottle) [New formulation no longer contains kelp - 05/12/16] and also stated that they've changed their mind about kelp's status since writing the book. They now conclude it doesn't contain salicylates (except they state to avoid medicinal kelp which is contradictory if kelp doesn't make sals!). Given the conflicting reports coming from that source about all sea plants we think it best to give it an Unsure status. Click here to see further information on chlorella. This status is to the best of our knowledge at this time and we'd certainly appreciate any blocking reports, or reports of good progress, using one or other products containing any sea plant. Whatever we receive will be listed here: 1 person using a makeup base containing an algae extract has reported not blocking. (06/01/10) 1 person using 3 different brands of chlorella has reported not blocking on any of them (07/07/10) Alpha PXP Forte contains only 100% natural ingredients: *specially selected rice grains* that contain Alpha PXP and *aquatic Alpha Spirulina (a micro-algae. Itīs a single-cell plant).* PXPs are *polysaccharide peptides*. Each PXP molecule contains a complete amino acid profile, complex carbohydrates, cofactors, vitamins and minerals. http://www.alfapxp.com.mx/EN/pxp4.html May actually be chemicals and ok but without understand if the process of extraction eliminates salicylates, it must remain here. (USA: 08/11/16) Arabinogalactin (sometimes called a gum,) *Sal-Unknown but highly suspect Arm & Hammer Dental Care Fluoride Toothpaste, Original Baking Soda, Maximum Strength (contains Mint) Aveeno Radiant Daily Moisturizer, no SPF; contains Glycine soja; Soybean Seed Extract Avon Skin-So-Soft Original Bath Oil Spray & Skin-So-Soft Original Moisturizing Bath Oil' mixed half and half with rubbing alcohol are suggested by Dr Mercola. Older preparations MAY be *Sal-Free but we have seen no current ingredients. If anyone has access to them, we can confirm the current status. Maybe carry on handkerchief rather than applying to skin.
More information re the extraction process needed. (05/07/19)
Camphor; 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (as far as we know, although camphor is not a salicylate, any ingredient with camphor contains salicylates as a trace impurity, since much camphor is extracted from natural plant sources).
Carb Blaster (AUS-03/08/020-BC: 9313923030568) previous runs during production & contain a small amount of sals in their base, but whether that is enough to block is unknown. If you decide to chew them anyway don't choose a mint (many Bubble gum flavors also contain some mint) & perhaps steer clear of the natural Cinnamons also, and see the blocking test instructions (remember that partial blocking isn't easy to detect without mapping over a good period of time). Chlorella Pyrenoidosa (an algae like spirulina) "In the fifteen years I have been involved with edible algae I have never come across any reference to the presence of salicylates, either naturally-occurring or as a result of additives to growth media, in Chlorella pyrenoidosa. CP is the only strain that we use in the manufacture of our products. Being an alga grown in controlled fresh water conditions (artificial ponds) I would consider chlorellas to be the least likely alga to contain salicylates. What I'm saying here is that we certainly wouldn't want people to assume that ALL encapsulated chlorellas are free from manufacturing additives. In addition, chlorella that has been tableted might possibly present a problem due to the variety of compounds used in the industry as binders and die release agents." Tim Sara, President & CEO, Nature's Balance, Inc GG would like to hear any reports of progress or blocking when using this or any other sea plant. 1 person using 3 different brands of chlorella has reported not blocking on any of them (07/07/10)
Cold-Eeze lozenges in cherry or orange flavor only, not citrus or mint (Low-Sal - 2 ppl reported blocking use only when blocking is the least of problem) Coppertone Shade Sunblock, Oil Free Gel, SPF 30 contains Dove Shampoos & Conditioners A member in the US has alerted us to the fact that they all contain Borage Extract. Another US member says her children are exceptionally Sal-SensitiveTM and they don't block on those she uses. (06/03/22)
Efferdent (Flavor Unknown)
Glyconutrients; Glyconutritionals
Mannose; Galactose; Fucose; Glucose; Xylose; N-acetylneuramic
acid (sialic acid); N-acetylgalactosamine; N-acetylglucosamine Should be Sal-FreeTM
in themselves but I talked with a Mannatech reprasentative about their AmbrotoseR
and I'm sorry to say that she was not very helpful regarding the
processes used to isolate the above chemicals. Although they are probably ok,
their information just isn't clear enough for us to say there would be no
contamination (especially the aloe). Also, Ambrotose contains proprietary
ingredients which they will not disclose and they did not respond to my question
about whether there were salicylates in those undisclosed ingredients. I am waiting for
information from NutratoseTM regarding their glyconutrients and other
ingredients.
Check all glyconutrient products very carefully.
(We think this would be ok in
FiberFit
as it is an algae, a fibre and ingested)
Irish Spring Deodorant Soap
(Original - green box)
No real confirmation that this contains any
new/salicylate ingredients (potential blockers) however Dr St Amand became
concerned so we decided to err on the side of caution by listing it as unsure.
Jasmonate: Winter refers us to jasomone, which is derived from
Kids Dental Kare Toothpaste, Strawberry & Bubble Gum
Meradimate (previously,
Menthyl anthranilate)
Tesa & the GG Sal
Team consider this is not a salicylate but Dr. St. Amand's office has stated that they are concerned about it
& prefer Guai'ers not to use it to be on the safe side. It would have
to be contaminated with sals to block.
concentrated herbals contain
enough sals to overwhelm the digestive process and block. In those cases it is best to err on the side of
caution to be safe. In products such as
protein powders and bars
it is impossible to know if there is enough to block or it
would be treated by the body as food, so best to assume that the herbals are there as a supplement and stay away.
Nail Polish:
It was originally thought that sals in nail polish would not be
a problem but now we think it might be absorbed. So, to be on the safe
side, you might want to avoid nail polish with sals.
Nicorette Gum, original (no flavor).
One member has said she blocked on it and had that backed up by mapping.
She is going to call the company and see if she can find out what they are
not listing. Mint and Orange may block many.
Noni juice
Oil Of Olay Daily Renewal Body Wash. No sals are listed on the label however the label also contains wording regarding fragrance that is suspicious and might contain enough botanicals to block (i.e. "scented to revitalize", and on the back label, "revitalizes your senses with an inviting bouquet of rich florals and hints of vanilla and spice in a rich luxurious creamy lather.") The company will not disclose information not on the label without a letter from your doctor about the state of your health that the unlisted ingredients might impact upon. Peridex (we don't know for sure that it contains mint but we know it has a decidedly minty flavor. A little sal in the flavor might be ok for some, as it is in PLAX mouth rinse, but if this does indeed contain mint we don't know in what measurements)
'Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent V Spray, Unscented (TOA) 23.8% DEET 6 oz' We have no information regarding the inactive ingredients in it.
Pampers Kandoo Flushable Wipes with Pop Top Dispenser Some time back, a GG member was told that all Pamper's wipes now contain aloe. Check with the company before using these. Ingredients: Water, Dimethicone, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Acrylates/Vinyl Isodecanoate Crosspolymer, Methylparaben, Disodium EDTA, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, Polysorbate 20, Fragrance (USA-05/09/20-BC: 0 37000 44990 4) (*Sal-Free chemical which should be ok (check Pherobase) but there has been some concern regarding possible contamination. It has a close relationship to menthol. See more on menthol) Plak Smacker Dinosaur Fluoride (Bubble Gum) 800-245-1825 (USA) Taken off the list merely because of the latest Colgate toothpaste scare. Pycnogenol A proprietary blend of Bioflavonoids extracted from Pine bark and needles. The extraction process of the blend is not clear and its inert ingredients are unknown.
Rapeseed (Brassica napus)
I knew it was a plant but not what family it was from so I looked it up.
Rapeseed (Brassica napus), along with canola, is a bright yellow flowering
member of the family Brassicaceae (mustard or cabbage family). The name
derives from the Latin for turnip. (even non-sal content strips can be risky because companies cannot guarantee that there is no aloe in any strip. They may be contaminated by previous runs of sal-content items - they don't clean their equipment after every run. You can remove the strip & clean the edge before use IF your reversal progress is ambiguous & you are looking for cause(s). Do the blocking test - several people have reported no blocking with the Gilette Mach 3 with vitamin E) Relive (We *think* this contains concentrated herbs even though a member was told it didn't. Why the need for a special product if these herbs can be attained relatively easy by eating them? We also had a blocking report.). Revlon's Naturally Glamorous Blush-On All-Day Cheekcolor contains Royal bee jelly is made from a secretion from bees special glands & as such one would think it didn't contain salicylates however one source claims it contains pollen extracts. At this point it needs more investigation but certainly pure Bee Jelly with no added ingredients should be ok. Check with manufacturer to discover the ingredients and how it is made.
Samento
Nutramedix told us via phone (Craig) that
they use the bark of the plant (cut up) and steep it like a tea in a special
type of alcohol for a period of time (he thought around a week). They then take
that and add other ingredients that are proprietary and that is how their
product is made. Terry thinks the special type of alcohol is part of the
proprietary method of extraction that they mention.
We've had one partial blocking report regarding Samento.
Secret Sheer Dry Antiperspirant Deodorant Gel Solid Regular Scent is confusing, i.e. 2 versions with same BC: 3700071183 found and some contained Castor Oil and some didn't)
Senokot tablets (not capsules) (01/09/03) sassafras and we have no info that it is just a fragrance)
Spirulina thus would be ok in a supplement if it didn't have an medicinal effect. Call the company to find its use in your product and let a Sal-mentor know. Stamp Glue Ingredients are unique to manufacturers. Even if they contained sals it is hard to imagine licking the odd one would be a problem but you can use a wet sponge or purchase self adhesive stamps if you have a lot to lick.
Sure Deodorants: these were all recently reported to be

The Homeopathic items has
been removed from the *Sal-Free listing
due to it having been discovered that the
homeopathic
calendula officinalis L. is in a strength [3X] that may block.
The apricot flavored t/pastes contain both apricot and orange oil in the apricot flavor which inherently contains salicylates
(based on Feingold's information) but at unknown levels and the
chemist at Tom's of Maine said the
apricot and grape flavors were a concern for salicylates.
Apricots are listed as very high in salicylates. We have no
idea what the levels of fennel are in the anticavity dry mouth.
Tom's said the amounts of salicylates that we
received from them before (re their other toothpastes) were provided by the
manufacturer and they have not received that information regarding the apricot
or grape products. They said that if they get anything new to report, they will
let me know. I cannot list any of the above items as *Neg-sal without those
measurements so they are now listed here instead thus allowing individuals to
make the decision whether to use them or not.
Several blocking reports have been received
regarding all Tom's toothpastes. (USA-05/05/27)
Note: Obviously blocking 'can' be a very subjective
experience. Sometimes members report blocking because of various
experiences which may or may not have been related to what every guai'er might
consider adequate testing
procedures.
Based on it's chemical structure,
thimerosal (incl. it's synonyms) is not a salicylate but rather, it is a
salicylate analogue. We don't think anyone knows if this particular analog
blocks, or indeed if any do, but we do know that parabens, which are also
analogues, don't. However, there are no synonyms for the parabens that contain
the word salicylate. At least that we know. We also don't know if Thimerosal
would convert to a salicylate in the body. We think it best to avoid analogs
that haven't yet been put to the test till we know more. Or at least keep a
very close eye on your response/progress and keep us informed after blocking
tests and/or mapping.
Vicks Vapor Inhaler
(According to drugstore.com it contains
lavender oil, which is a salicylate. Although it isn't applied in the usual way
to the outer surface of the skin per se, we are concerned that the vapors would
be absorbed directly by the nasal tissue as it is inhaled. One needs to make an
informed choice to use it. In the short term it may very well be worth the risk.
In the long term please do a blocking test, get mapped and/or be conscious re
your symptoms/cycling)
