Guai-Support
Mailing List Topics
Revised August 29, 2006
When you create a new message you
specify a subject line to describe the message in order to make it easier for
people to determine if they want to read the message. The topic keywords
(TKW's) below are used on the Guai-Support List so that members can define which
messages they want to receive into their mailbox. They are used in
conjunction with definitive subject keywords (SKW's).
If you want/need to send a message to a
topic you don't receive you can do so. In order to see the discussion you
can read the thread in the archives.
Members can further control their mail by setting key words and phrases in their email
program 'filters' and thus guide mail into appropriate mailboxes, or delete it.
read how to facilitate incoming and outgoing mail focus, including adding
and removing topics.
The default topics
for newcomers are GUAI, SAL, HG & FMS.
ALL is not a topic per se` but
ensures that messages labeled ALL will reach anyone set to receive mail.
It is restricted to management but can be utilized by members for announcements
but they must have permission from the ListOwner first
*
Do not discuss politics or religion or
request that members sign petitions for these or any other purpose.
Please keep in mind that all messages
must be
suitable for an International
list dedicated to supporting FMS sufferers following a Guaifenesin protocol. Spiritual
messages of support or requests/offers for any type of energy healing etc., may go to
OTHER topic. See below.
UPPER CASE are the abbreviations and can be used in place of full topic keyword
but TKWs are NOT case sensitive - these examples are all correct:
HG-DIET:, HG-Diet:, HG-diet:, hg-diet:, HG:, hg:, etc.
The list rules apply fully to all Topics -
OTHER isn't moderated regarding it's subject line but other embargoes such as
too much quoting, leaving original message attached, flaming members, etc.,
still apply.

1.
Email Subject Line - About Topic Keywords
When you create a new message you specify a
subject line to describe the message in order to make it easier for people to
determine if they want to read the message. These topic keywords (TKW's)
are used on the Guai-Support List.
GUAI, SAL, HG-DIET
and FMS
ARE DEFAULT TOPICS (received automatically by all new subscribers).
OTHER
is not (unless you are set to DIGEST mode).
ALL is not a topic per se.
If you set yourself to receive ALL
you will receive all the messages sent to the list no matter what the label is
in the subject line.
You do not have to set
ALL
to receive the ADMIN messages which arrive under that topic. The ADMIN
messages will reach every member set to receive mail no matter what topics they
have set. It is reserved for the ListOwner and mentors to insert into a
subject line when they send admin message and should never be inserted by a
member without first
requesting permission.
Since it's possible for
people on the mailing list to specify what topics they want to receive,
it's important to Include a topic keyword (TKW).
If you don't want your mail moderated for topic and subject keyword compliance
you may choose not to include topic or subject keywords. In that case your
mail will go to OTHER which is not a default topic and may not reach your entire
targeted audience (but will of course reach all those who have set themselves to
receive the OTHER topic mail) and assistance may not be forthcoming from the
ListOwner, ListOwner assistants or
Sal-mentors.
Not only does selecting correct "topic keywords" (TKWs) ensure that members only
receive the mail they set topics for but creating good topic and subject words
also makes searching the archives & reading the digest version easier -- it also
helps members who need to limit their reading.
Each subscriber is responsible for
ensuring that the topic and subject keywords reflect the content of their own
messages whether it be a new message or a response.
It is much better for all members if messages are labeled so you can add a topic
keyword to the original sender's message if you wish your response to be seen by
a targeted audience.
Sometimes a thread starts out fine under one topic keyword but the response you
make changes the focus or zeroes in on a particular angle that was mentioned as
part of the overall message so TKW and/or SKW changes to the subject field are
necessary.
If you like you can also add the previous TKW/SKW in brackets to the subject
line, i.e.: (was: TKW etc), and don’t delete the original sender’s address.
If the message is mislabeled or unlabeled you can add a topic keyword and note
it at the top of your message that you've done it so that your response to their
message will be seen by both your targeted audience.
It is concern to some that the
person who sent the message they are responding to will miss their response if
they change the TKW or subject. Adding a TKW will not cause a problem but
if you change a TKW it might be that the original sender doesn't receive that
topic. This potential problem is overcome by choosing "reply to all" and
NOT deleting the sender's address.
2.
Correct Topic Keyword (TKW) - syntax
examples
Unless the TKW is inserted correctly in the subject line your
topic choice will be invalidated,
thus your message will go to OTHER
automatically (i.e. unlabeled, mislabelled & social chat) topic and your
message may not reach all of your intended audience.
The *FIRST WORD* in the Subject line
should be a Topic keyword (TKW).
Adding the already programmed [GG] may invalidate your choice.
Topic keywords must end with a colon,
e.g., Guai: Your subject keywords
TKWs are not case sensitive - these examples are all correct: HG: HG-DIET:,
HG-Diet:, HG-diet:, hg-diet: etc.
No multiple topic keywords;
people restrict their topic choices and often multiple TKWs defeat that choice,
i.e.: those choosing to receive the GUAI topic and not FMS will do so
deliberately to avoid the broader material discussed in FMS. Please be
considerate and don't thwart their choice by choosing multiple topic keywords.
It is also much clearer if questions and answers for particular issues are
addressed in particular topics, both for the writer and the reader. For
that reason I have not instructed on how to insert multiple topic keywords.
3.
Email Subject Line - About Subject Keywords
Your topic keywords
(TKW) must be followed by good defining subject keywords (SKWs) of your choice,
which adequately reflect the content of your message. Many members select what
to read by the subject field and it also makes searching the archives easier.
A good guideline for this is to use a few words excerpted from your message or
refer to a major point in your message.
Please ensure that your topic & subject
keywords reflect the content of your message.
IF the discussion changes make sure
it is reflected in the Subject line field with the Topic and Subject keywords
(and is not simply left on from previous posts). Change it where
necessary. If the message is mislabeled or unlabeled you can add a topic
and subject keywords and note it at the top of your message that you've done it
so that your response to their message will be seen by both the original author
and your newly targeted audience.
Don't type 'newbie', 'question', 'progress
report' or any other generic token words.
You can label your message that way including words like 'update' or 'progress
report' but you must also add something else distinctive to you and your
circumstances and which reflects the content of your message, i.e.: 'Guai:
Newbie/I started Guai and..', 'FMS: Intro/Looking for answers re:…...', 'Guai:
Question/Can I ..blah blah?', 'Guai: Progress Report/given my life back', 'Guai:
Progress Report/Jane/1 yr', etc..
Do not have a subject that says
"Re: Guai-Support Digest xxx ...".
Click
here to find out how to deal with posting from the digest.
Re-posting messages isn't an option
due to archive space crunch.
If it's important to you that your message reach your intended audience take
your time and focus on inserting your TKW correctly. If you make a mistake such
as not including a TKW, you can write again directing the membership to your
message in the archives. Let them know the subject line you used.
*Use the
Last
Minute Checklist (LMCL)
4.
Some examples of voided/invalidated TKWs
They go to OTHER topic and may not
be seen by you or your targeted audience
(a) Plural TKWs i.e.: "Guais: cycling" or "Sals: Product name"
(b) No colon after TKW, i.e.: "[GG] FMS Lost my doctor"
(c) No space left after the colon and before the subject keywords, i.e.: "[GG]
FMS:Lost my doctor"
(d) Colon inserted in the wrong space, i.e.: "[GG] FMS :Lost my doctor" or "[GG]
FMS : Lost my doctor"
(e) Semi-colon, comma, slash, hyphen, underscore etc. used instead of colon
i.e.: "Guai; cycling my fingers", "Guai, cycling my fingers", "Guai/cycling my
fingers", "Guai-cycling my fingers" or "Guai_cycling my fingers".
(f) Brackets around the TKW, i.e., (Guai) or {Guai}
(g) Anything typed to the
left of the TKW (except 'Re' or 'FWD' or 'FW'), e.g. typed 'GG' (it is auto
inserted with the List programming & adding another voids your TKW).
5. Subscribers can restrict topics - This feature is
NOT available in DIGEST mode
Restricting Topics is much simpler if done at the web
interface.
Click
here to set topics via web interface.
Scroll down to the topics heading and check
or un-check your choices, then click on the "Update options" button.
Settings via Email:
You can add or delete Topics - use plus (+) and minus (-) signs. Please be
careful to PUT SPACES WHERE THEY BELONG in commands i.e.: a space after each TKW
but none after the symbols and before the TKW. Use the topic setting examples
here as templates.
*Upper case is just to define the
commands and settings in the
examples but not necessary for you to use either in settings or in subject
lines.
Send all commands in the body of an e-mail message to:
LISTSERV@COMMUNITY.LSOFT.COM
[do not sign or say thank you - this is an auto computer task and
superfluous data will invalidate the command]
Topicname
must be replaced with the actual topic keyword.
To delete a Topic you are presently receiving, send the command:
SET GUAI-SUPPORT TOPICS: -Topicname
To add a Topic you are not presently receiving, send the command:
SET GUAI-SUPPORT TOPICS: +Topicname
More than one topic can be added and/or deleted in a single command:
SET GUAI-SUPPORT TOPICS: +Topic1 +Topic2
(The first topic keyword must have the plus sign to show that this is an
addition, and not a replacement.)
6.
Topics Cheat Sheet
Until fully confident please always read
Detailed Outline of Topics listed below the cheat
sheet. Members must read all the Admin. messages - They arrive under ALL in the subject line (no need to set ALL
however. If you are set to mail you will receive it even if you only
receive one topic).
No

than the spiritual support referred to in the OTHER topic) and no politics

OTHer
Social chat, Spiritual support/energy
healing etc. (use subject keywords as suggested in the full topic
description below), unlabeled/mislabelled
messages & anything not fitting into previous default topics.
Some items may be considered 'spiritual' by some members and perhaps 'usual'
by others thus, as long as the subject line contains some indication of what
might be covered in the message it is fine. Don't worry too much about this
as GG takes a broad minded view and we know you'll be doing your best.

Penniston D.C.
7.
Detailed Outline of all Topics
Multiple topic keywords are difficult to use
appropriately and thus they are prohibited
unless, when a
particular message's content may suit 2 or more topics (or you feel the lines of
your message are blurred), special permission is
sought from
Tesa or
Wendy.
ListOwner & helpers
excepted and where it is used by them, members may of course
reply to that subject line unless the focus of their message changes.
NOTE:
Gregory K. Penniston, D.C. is a
chiropractor and applied kinesiologist who has been in private practice in
Tucson, Arizona for the past 23 years.
He wrote the book,
The Guaifenesin Guide
(which is
out of print) and
has now written a 2nd edition
titled,
Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue & Irritable Bowel: Treating Symptoms Treating
Cause.
More Information
If you specifically want Dr Penniston
D.C. to respond to your questions, he
will reply to a subject line containing his name, e.g.,
Guai: Dr Penniston/your question, FMS: Dr
Penniston/your question
(or any topic keyword that is applicable). His
participation on the mailing list does not imply agreement with
nor representation of the views of GG, which fields all views for members'
information and support.
(Click
here to open your e-mail program with the GG mailing list address
already inserted. You just need to include a subject line as per
examples above.) All topic keyword examples follow.
GUAI
Strictly to do with your personal
experience on Guai
Many of the questions have been asked before
or the answers are in the FAQs, archives, Dr St Amand’s papers or Dr Penniston's
FAQ; politely direct each other to those items when appropriate. Ask questions
and share information re: your personal day to day experiences of dealing with
the protocol; cycling, what may or may not be a symptom of it, dose, mapping and Guai doctor
experiences; questions about where to find them in your area, etc. Progress/update reports very
welcome.
Please type
definitive subject keywords which
reflect the content of your message rather than just 'Progress
Report', i.e. , "update, I’m able to
go out more", Guai: Progress Report -- First
Name/1yr.
Please don't respond with *support* type messages to this topic - keep the
messages to the (Guai) point with questions and helpful advice etc; if someone
asks questions relate your experience, ask the member questions to help her/him
understand their situation and generally share information on how the protocol
works and how it’s worked for you. Members need to hear the different
experiences. Don’t hold back if your experience is different. If you are not
experiencing the typical cycling share that with the members. You will not be
alone and it will help you as well as others going through the same or similar
things.
Make sure your questions in this topic are in reference to the protocol and your
individual experience on it , not about other methods to relieve symptoms.
Switch to the "FMS" topic when the replies to questions asked in GUAI
better suit it.

Please give a brief dose history, i.e. date you started Guai, how long you
stayed on each dose, present dose, if you blocked what item it was which blocked
you & for how long; either locate it in the context of your letter, or if
you prefer, at the top or bottom of it (please relate it
across the page to save archive space). If you wish to create a signature
line which you can choose to append to appropriate messages to the list please
SAL
All salicylate product and ingredient queries; whether they might block the
Guaifenesin's action.
Questions & responses regarding products
other members use or recommend which are *Sal-Free. All product
discussion. No advertising by companies (no SPAM).
It is appropriate to ask the SAL status of ANY item under this TKW, so long as
it's not already listed on the Sal-Free/Full listsTM. You may
also like to check the Sal
Search Tips document. If you can't find the status of an
ingredient, or are confused about anything, post a query to the list. When
you ask questions let us know where you have looked already so we don't waste
time covering the same ground.
Please always insert into the subject
line the name of product and, if unclear, the type of product you are
questioning ingredients for.
Next, insert the ingredients (not
already located on GG web site) into the body of the message. If it might
seem unclear to the reader please also include any information about how you are
using the product.
Always list the "exact" name of product when querying it's status; the
slightest difference in name or spelling can be very confusing and lead to a
wrong conclusion.
When asking questions about a product please realize that we can only tell you
whether a product is Sal-FreeTM or not based on the ingredients you list. If
it's been questioned before, and it's not on one of the Sal lists, it will be in
the archives so look there first. Always check right up to the present
date since there is often a lot of confusion about ingredients in question.
Signature: Please give a brief dose history,
i.e. date you started Guai, how long you stayed on each dose, present dose, if
you blocked what item it was which blocked you & for how long; either locate it
in the context of your letter, or if you prefer, at the top or bottom of it
(please relate it across the page to save archive space).
Look out for my Interim updates to the list about this topic with the subject
line: SAL: New products/changes to the next edition Sal-Free (see archives for
past copies).
There are various sources for seeking the sal status of an item and many of them
are listed in the Sal

Discussion of
Hypoglycemia, Insulin Resistance (IR, Syndrome X, Diabetes Type
11/Adult Onset Diabetes, Diabetes, etc.) causes & treatments. Support & exchange of recipes & ideas.
All Low Carb eating plans which will
curtail symptoms and promote health including aiding weight loss.
To limit confusion when you write messages/questions to the list please:
a) name the diet you are referring to;
b) state if you are you adhering to it correctly or making changes;
c) state why you are on the diet (to lose weight - for HG or IR, to help during
the initial cycles.
It makes sense to join a Low-Carb diet mailing list which is totally
focused on a low-carb diet but it does not restrict you from talking about any
diet which claims to address any insulin condition here. In fact we'd
appreciate you sharing anything you learn with us.
Support is of paramount importance, i.e.: queries, discussions, confessions,
recipes, diet hints and helpful ideas, withdrawal, weight loss/not,
frustrations, other resources and recipes which suit those with hypoglycemia,
Insulin Resistance (Diabetes Type 2, Adult onset), Carbohydrate
intolerance. etc..
It is suggested that you insert the word RECIPE in the subject line of any HG-Diet message which contains a recipe. It's not a rule, only a suggestion
and will
definitely make it easier to find recipes in the archives, and of course easier
to see when skimming mail. Example subject line:
HG: Recipe; meatloaf
HG: Recipe; cheesecake
You can use the same format for helpful hints and ideas also e.g.
HG: HINT; whatever.
Copyright issue: To my knowledge single
recipes cannot be copyrighted (but a collection can be) thus sending copies of
single recipes to the list is ok. Do not send 'collections' of recipes
from another source, e.g. book or web site, etc., to the list.
Hypoglycemic 'comments' may be included in the GUAI topic when querying Guai
cycling but it must be limited thus this topic provides much more scope.
FMS
(Fibromyalgia Syndrome)
Longer more informative introductions are possible in this topic,
as well as all discussions deviating from the
guai protocol. This allows
you to keep your Guai/Sal/HG etc., questions and discussions for the appropriate
topics.
No cosmetic product discussion please (take that to the SAL topic).
Allows further discussion of your individual experiences in a more relaxed and
social way without the pressure of "sticking to the Guai subject". It
is for those who wish to be more 'chatty' in relating their experiences and for
one to receive the loving support that is needed so much during this protocol.
This allows the "Guai" TKW (Topic Keyword) the strictness it needs to
satisfy the list's purpose.
All product suggestions for dealing directly with Cycling Symptoms i.e.,
all
discussion of other supportive methods & treatments you find beneficial,
or would like to query or discuss using along with
Guaifenesin, or instead of while on a break, or experimenting, or the HG-Diet. These might include massage, exercise, yoga, pain,
sleep medications, supplements, detox protocols, whey, Recuperat-ION, CSM,
Metabolic protocols, Antibiotic protocols, Colloidal Silver, etc.
Please insert the names of other treatments in the subject line after the topic
keyword so that disinterested members can skip.
Any serious discussion regarding FMS/CFS/MPS/MCS "SYMPTOMS" in general which are
not necessarily related to Guai "cycling" experience, for instance in trying to
discover if one has FMS they might wish to question if a particular symptom is
actually FMS and if others experience it also. Debating whether FMS is
actually another condition such as Lyme or TH1, etc., is fine too.
Asking about doctors who treat with the protocol, where they are located and if
others can share their experience of the doctor etc., submitting both
doctors and mappers for the members (which I'll list on the web site) discussion on the
difficulties of getting heard in the community, i.e. spreading the word, letter
writing campaigns re the protocol and Guai products, and various other things which
effect you while living with FMS; Pensions, health insurance, family situations, work situations,
raising a family etc..
In this topic discussions can be more general, not necessarily personal.

Jokes;

Please check the archives to ensure they haven't been sent to the list
previously. Delete Headers/email address lists, quote >>> marks, extra
signatures and any other extraneous info.
Spiritual messages of support
(NOT religious 'discussion') includes
requests/offers for any type of energy healing, prayer, support, etc.
This is open to all religious and spiritual
thoughts, so those using it and electing to receive the mail, must be prepared
for messages from a belief perspective other than their own. One must be very
careful to label their messages appropriately
(e.g., "Other: Spiritual/Christian/further keywords to define content more
completely.", Other: Spiritual/Jewish/further subject keywords (SKW's).........", OTHER:
Spiritual/Islamic/further skw's.......", Other: Spiritual/Pagan/further
keywords....", etc.). Sometimes a message may be considered to fit under
all denominations, or none, and thus 'spiritual', or something else you feel
fitting, will suffice.

Fibromyalgia,
Chronic Fatigue & Irritable Bowel: Treating Symptoms Treating Cause
By Dr Gregory K. Penniston
(The re-titled new edition to
The Guaifenesin Guide)
A unique book that gives sufferers and their
families clear explanations and practical information on every type of treatment
for these distressing and hard to manage disorders. It dispels the
misconceptions, that lead some people to dismiss these conditions, with
thoughtful explanations and reasoning. This book gives emphasis to eliminating
the conditions by addressing their 'cause', with a commonly used
'over-the-counter' medication, guaifenesin and provides detailed, easy-to-follow
guidelines.

Examining Guaifenesin
Parting the Fog: The Personal Side of Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
By Sue Jones, a GG Member
Parting the Fog" is a candid,
first person account of what it is like to walk in the shoes of someone
suffering from fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome. It relays the
seriousness of this condition in an easy-to-read manner, while employing
humor and focusing on hope.

Crack Up at the Wake of Dawn: Everyday Poetry to Incite and Delight Your
Soul
Another great Book from our GG Member Sue Jones!
If you are a fan of "Parting the Fog", you won't
want to miss this book. Although it isn't specific to fibro, you WILL find
chapters you can closely relate to, since many topics are dealt with. Some
of the poems may make you cry, others make you laugh, and still others
trigger a thought or give you greater insight. Whichever the case, you won't
be left unaffected.

Take My Hand: The Extraordinary Story of a Girl Named Janis
In Take My Hand, Audrey Revell (a
long time member of GG) paints a vivid and moving picture of the life and
indomitable spirit of her daughter Janis, an exceptionally talented musician and
composer despite having lost her sight as a child together with progressive
hearing loss.
