Products for Low-Carbohydrate Diet Most specialty products are pricey, partly because many low-carb treats use "real" / healthy ingredients and alas... quality usually costs more dineros than junky stuff. Another factor is the RISK factor, of designing a specialty product for a small group of potential customers - a product no one knows about and many do not really know how to prepare or appreciate. So, is that $6.95 bottle of chocolate sauce a good investment, or that lemon burst cookie, or the can of cherries for pie filling, or OR or OR or... ugh!!! And, can they be salvaged even after following - precisely, mind you, and usually at least twice - the seemingly hallucinogenic incorrect printed instructions for use?

You Don t Have to Be Rich to Be Slim It's a mistake to assume that doing Atkins is the rich man's way to lose weight. Regularly including high-priced cuts of meat and other expensive foods in your eating plan is unnecessary; there are countless inexpensive and delicious options that are low in carbs." SomerSweet (Low-carb sweetener) Comments below from GG Member Jean S Some people have reported headaches from Splenda. Not everyone can tolerate it. I have no idea if limiting the amount of intake might reduce the threat of headaches - perhaps others can comment. Splenda is "bleached" sugar. Some folks have concerns about how it is processed and the potential side affects. A google search on Splenda side affects will proivde info that can be not only discouraging but confusing There doesn't seem to be one final answer on this subject I have previously suggested an alternative sweetener: SomerSweet. It is made from a plant that is 5 times sweeter than sugar. It's completely natural and safe to use on the Guai protocol. You can do any and all types of cooking with Somersweet - even caramelize a creme brule. There are a couple of drawbacks: 1) it's pricey 2) open cans should be kept in the fridge to avoid it turning to a rock (but is also available in sealed packets that don't have this problem) and 3) it is sometimes hard to dissolve in cold beverages. If one sprinkles and stirs gradually, this is not a problem. Of note - if you decide to try Somesweet, DON'T stick your finger in to taste it. It's far too sweet to sample this way and you end up with sticky fingers to boot. It comes with directions on equivalent amounts compared to regular sugar and is easy to use. There are also lots of recipes available on line for using Somersweet. I carry the packets in my purse all the time. One packet is equivalent to two tsp. sugar, enough for me to sweeten two cups of decaf coffee or decaf tea.
Somersweet does contain acesulfame K. Please note ace-K is the last ingredient
listed I cannot recommend other food products which contain Somersweet. I've had to return a number of items I was dissatisfied with. I only order the cans packets of Somersweet. It has no aftertaste like Stevia and works great in baking as it acts as a bulking agent as well. For those
concerned about ace-K or fructose the simplest thing is not to use If anyone ever comes across an alternative sweetener that is completely natural I'd love to hear about it - especially if it's good and without an aftertaste Post to GG Mailing list). Baker's Delight: Cape Seed Loaf
To help you make low GI choices when buying bread, look for the Glycemic Index tested symbol. You’ll find it on Burgen Soy-Lin (GI 38), Burgen Oatbran & Honey (GI 49), Burgen Rye (GI 51), Cripps 9-Grain (GI 43), Country Life Bakery Performax (GI 38), Tip Top 9 Grain (GI 43), Tip Top 9 Grain Muffins (GI 43), and Tip Top Retreats Spicy Fruit Loaf (GI 54). If there’s no packet or labelling, look for a really grainy bread like Bakers Delight Cape Seed Loaf (GI 48), or stoneground wholemeal or sourdough breads. Beware of false low GI claims. To find the GI of your favourite bread, check The New Glucose Revolution Complete Guide To GI Values, or ring the local manufacturer. Pro Health store at Northland have a product called Carb Blaster. The smallest bottle contains 30 tablets at $24.95. The 1Phaseolus vulgaris does contain salicylates but the salicylate levels in these products are usually quite low (as to whether the measurements are enough to block (Fruit contains a low of 1.1 parts per millions and a high of 10, and the seed, a high of 0.1). I hazard to guess that most HFS's (health food shops) stock them now. They seem to allow one to eat the occasional high carb food with no insulin reaction. Check GG archives for more on Carb Cutter or Carb Blaster. 1One person at one company here in Australia, says that the TGA rule ensures that all herbal products MUST contain various extracts from the plant rather than just a single chemical. If this is true it would make all supplements containing plants problematic for Aussies. I have no idea if it is true. The unsweetened Chocolate in the US is chocolate only. No other ingredients. Substitute for plain unsweetened Baker's Chocolate: For each 1 ounce square, 3 tablespoons cocoa, dry and 1 tablespoon of margarine or butter. The
Lessons of History: Why is heart disease epidemic today? And why is it more
prevalent in certain cultures? Cleave's hypothesis does give one explanation of what brought about the heart-disease epidemic in the industrialized world. Let's look at a couple of atypical Western countries. In Iceland, heart disease (and diabetes) was almost unheard of until the 1930s, although the Icelanders ate a diet tremendously high in fat. In the early 1920s, however, refined carbohydrates and sugar arrived in the Icelandic diet and, true to Cleave's rule, the degenerative diseases arrived on schedule." Excerpt from: What are Polyols? Polyols are derived from sugars, but they are not processed by the body like sugars. Polyols have many advantages such as reduced calories as compared to sugar, reduced insulin response, ability to be labeled "sugar-free" and "no sugar added", do not promote tooth decay, and do not brown in bakery applications (i.e. no Maillard reaction). Tips & Advice from CountCarbs.com Titles recommended by members Check what may be available at your public library. Consider each book and recipe carefully to see if it suits the diet you have chosen for your condition, whether it be merely deciding to curtail carbs/sugar to reveal any benefits or because you are suffering from: Hypoglycemia, Insulin Resistance (Syndrome X), Diabetes ll or Diabetes. Also remember that "sugar free" does not mean low-carb or low-calorie, etc. And, the term "sugar free" can be misleading because recipes may use honey, fructose, etc. Just because the recipe is touted as "OK", dont believe it until you have verified the ingredients. variety of gluten-free bread recipes. Reminiscent of health-food junkie
books of yore, this collection will leave you not only delighted with options
but smug with the knowledge that you really are eating smart. Each recipe provides an impressive breakdown of carb and protein counts for each
ingredient, so you can easily sub other preferences and still tally your carbs.
Fiber is subtracted from total carb count, so you know which carbs count... and
each serving is very low in carbs and usually high in protein. Think cookies...
