Self Test To Detect HYPOGLYCÆMIA In Adults Adapted for the Guai-Support Network by Gretchen Parker, from 'association des Hypoglycemiques du Québec inc.' June 23, 2000 The following were questions suggested by l'Association des
Hypoglycémiques du Québec and are designed to help adults perform a self analysis test
for hypoglycaemia. This test is not intended to replace nor
challenge proper medical diagnosis and care.
When you have completed each section of the test, add up your total. b) After each question you might note the frequency of the symptoms once a day, or once a month,etc. PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS OF HYPOGLYCAEMIA *1 When you wake up, are you tired or do you feel that you're not refreshed? 2 Are you irritable when you wake up? *3 Do you feel better after breakfast than before? 4 Do you need a coffee to really start your day? 5 Do you skip breakfast? 6 Do you skip some meals? 7 Do you eat less than 1,000 calories a day? *8 Do you sometimes feel extremely weak without any apparent reason? *9 Have you ever lost all your energy suddenly for no apparent reason? *10 If this ever happens, do you feel better after a meal or a coffee break? *11 Have you ever run out of energy around 10 a.m., late afternoon or late evening? *12 During the day, do you ever suddenly break out in a sweat (even when it's cold), accompanied by a feeling of hunger, heart pounding, dizziness and the impression that you may lose consciousness? *13 Do you have hot flashes that are not associated with menopause? 14 Have you ever had black-outs? *15 Have you ever lost consciousness? *16 Do you have heart palpitations when meals are late or missed? 17 Do you sometimes have the feeling that your chest is constricted? 18 Do you have difficulty breathing (short of breath, can't get enough air) at 10 a.m., at 4 p.m. and during the night? 19 Have you ever had an asthma attack? 20 Were you ever dizzy, especially when you got up quickly? *21 Are you ever uncoordinated or do you ever stagger? 22 Do you sometimes feel muddled or confused? 23 Have you had convulsions? 24 Have you ever experienced hallucinations? *25 Do you always feel tired? 26 Do you suffer from low blood pressure? *27 Do you ever have headaches when you get up, late afternoon or during the night? 28 Do you suffer from migraine headaches a few days a month? *29 Do you get a headache a few hours after drinking alcohol? *30 Does alcohol go to your head quickly? *3l Do you crave alcohol every day? *32 Do you drink 3 to 15 coffees a day as a stimulant? *33 Do you drink more than one soft drink a day? 34 Do you take medicine (antidepressants, aspirin, ...) which stimulate, give you energy, pull you out of your depression. Or do you take medicine which induces hypoglycaemia (antibiotics, the Pill. valium, etc.)? 35 Are you a chain-smoker? *36 Do you crave chocolate nearly every day? *37 Do you have cravings for sugar, candy or cakes? *38 Do you always feel hungry, even after a meal (insatiable appetite)? Have you periodically completely lost your appetite or lost it only in the morning? *40 Are you hungry between meals? *41 Do you have to snack between meals to avoid feeling weak and hungry and to stop shaking? *42 Do you tremble inside? *43 Do your hands shake when you're hungry or when meals are late? *44 Do you tend to yawn a few times a day? *45 Do you feel sleepy during the day? 46 Do you feel sleepy as soon as you sit down to have a rest? 47 Do you get sleepy watching T.V.? 48 Do you feel sleepy when you read? 49 Do you feel sleepy after a big meal? 50 Do you have abdominal spasms or cramps between meals? 51 Do you or have you ever suffered from stomach ulcers? 52 Do you have chronic indigestion or gas? Is your mouth dry or parched? Do you tend to have bad breath? 53 Have you suffered from an inflammation of the large intestine or from an ulcerous colon? 54 Do you frequently have diarrhea? 55 Do you urinate often? 56 Do you have back-aches *57 Is your vision blurred during periods of low energy? 58 Does bright sun tire your eyes? Do you feel weaker after being in the sun? *59 Do you have circulation problems (cold hands, cold feet...)? 60 Do you feel pain in your muscles or joints during the day? Do you have cramps, numbness or spasms before falling asleep? 61 Have you ever woken up at night feeling unpleasant physical sensations? 62 Do you get up at night to eat? 63 Do you ever wake up after sleeping a few hours and have trouble falling back to sleep again? *64 Are you more of a night person (full of energy at night) than a day person? 65 Do you sweat a lot at night? 66 Do you suffer from insomnia? Total your answers for questions 1 to 66 SYMPTOMS PROBLEMS ILLNESSES WHICH ACCOMPANY OR HIDE HYPOGLYCAEMIA *67 Are you over weight. (10 lbs or 5 kg too much)? *68 a) Are you obese (25 lbs or 12 kg too much)? b) Are you anorexic? *69 Are you or were you an alcoholic? 70 Do you have stomach ulcers? 71 Are you allergic to several foods or medicines? 72 Are you arthritic? Do you have arthritis? 73 Do you suffer from sinusitis or asthma? 75 Do you feel delinquent (irresponsible)? 76 Are you pregnant or breast-feeding? 77 Does anyone in your family have diabetes? 78 Is anyone in your family an alcoholic or in a depression? 79 Are you going through menopause? 80 Are you getting over a major crisis at the moment? 81 Are you going through a divorce? 82 Is your life stressful (job, problems, etc.)? 83 Is your menstruation painful? 84 Do you suffer from premenstrual syndrome? Total your answers for questions 67 to 84 PSYCHOLOGICAL SYMPTOMS OF HYPOGLYCÆMIA *85 Are you easily lost, mixed up, confused? *86 Are you often incapable of concentrating, especially late afternoon (difficulty reading, doing calculations, following a conference or lengthy instructions, ...) 87 Do you have unfounded anxiety? *88 Do you lose your temper easily, especially before meals? 89 Are you easily angered, aggressive or even violent? 90 Has it ever been suggested that you consult a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist, or have you thought of consulting one yourself? 91 Have you ever thought of committing suicide? *92 Are you an indecisive person, especially at the end of the day? 93 Do you ever cry without apparent reason? 94 Are you supersensitive to noise? 95 Do you ever collapse into tears or have fits of hysterics? 96 Do you have to fight against several fears or phobias,? 97 Do you ever feel apart or outside of reality? Do you ever think you are going insane? *98 Does your personality change at different times of the day? 99 Do you neglect your appearance, your personal hygiene and even neglect to keep things tidy around you? 100 Do you have some of the signs of depression? 101 Are you often irritable? 102 Do you think you are lacking sexual potency or, on the contrary, do you have excessive sexual desires? 103 Do you think you are asocial or antisocial? *104 Are you incapable of working under pressure to the point of having difficulty keeping a job? 105 Do you lack initiative? *106 Are you very emotional? 108 Do you exaggerate unimportant details? *109 Is your memory faulty (gaps, forgetfulness, ...)? 110 Do you feel insecure? Are you always worried? Total your answers for questions 86 to 111 Calculate your grand total (the sum of the three preceding totals) 1.
